7 Unexpected Denim Pieces You'll Want To Add To Your Fall Wardrobe

Let's face it, we're rarely surprised by a "new" denim trend. After all, denim is notorious for acting on a cyclical basis, with jeans, jackets, and everything in between constantly being recycled over a ten or twenty year basis. It happened with mom jeans, cropped denim jackets, high-rise midi skirts, mini skirts, flares, skinny jeans and more. But for the first time in what feels like forever, we're getting a glimpse of some mint condition trends in the denim department.

Brands are, at last, making some imaginative baby blues we can get behind. From the new way to wear bike shorts to patchwork denim bucket hats, we're betting you didn't expect any of the seven actually innovative, new denim trends we're calling out ahead.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Hats Off To Denim
By far, hats are the fall accessory we're most excited to try out once the temperature drops. And since jeans and fall go together like Kim and Kanye, what better way to start off hat season than with one made entirely from denim?

Bust It Up
Corsets are slowly but surely making their way back into our wardrobes. This time, however, they're not being used to suck us in, but rather as a styling piece to layer over the rest of our clothing. Our favorite style: Bustiers made of good ol' American denim.

Wild Country
Like it or not, the wild, wild West is having one hell of a fashion moment. Pioneered last fall by Ganni's crocodile take on the cowboy boot and kept up by prairie-style dressing from the likes of Batsheva and Brock Collection, western-style dressing isn't likely to leave us anytime soon — a fact proven by the recent influx in cowboy-inspired denim button-downs.

Crossover Denim
There's something to say about a pair of jeans that actually look different from the rest — and these most certainly do. The asymmetric crossover fly, combined with an oversized, baggy fit, make for a pair of jeans we can rally behind.

Tour de Shorts
Not that we don't still love a pair of cotton or spandex bike shorts, but whoever thought to give them a denim touch deserves some credit. And while shorts might not be exactly weather appropriate come fall, with the environment these days, you never know when another 80 degree day will show its face.

Suit Up
Where 2019 was all about office workwear (i.e., oversized blazers, matching suit sets, even the occasional tie), we're predicting 2020 to steer in another job-related style direction: utility attire. Between chunky boots and carpenter pants, you'll be hard-pressed to find a utilitarian silhouette that's not trending ATM. But if we had to call out one style that's leading the pack, it'd have to be boiler suits.

Utility Jackets
If utility jumpsuits are making waves, utility jackets are causing a full blown storm at sea.
